How to use ashwagandha powder: 5 easy ways
Ashwagandha is an earthy root powder. Here is how to mix it into warm milk, smoothies and porridge.
Ashwagandha is a shrub, and the powder is made from its dried root. It is a pale brown powder with a strong, earthy, slightly bitter taste and a woody smell. It is best hidden in foods that are sweet or creamy, which soften the flavour.
How much to use
Start with a quarter to half a teaspoon in a cup or a bowl, and taste. Do not add large amounts. Stir it into liquid well, because it does not dissolve and can settle at the bottom of the cup.
Ways to use it
- Warm spiced milk. Whisk half a teaspoon into a cup of hot milk with honey, a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of cardamom.
- Banana smoothie. Blend a quarter teaspoon with a banana, a spoon of nut butter and milk. The banana covers the bitter taste.
- Porridge and oats. Stir a quarter teaspoon into the pot as the porridge cooks, then add honey.
- Hot chocolate or cocoa. Mix half a teaspoon into a mug of cocoa. The cocoa covers the earthy taste well.
- Energy balls. Mix a quarter teaspoon into dates, oats and nut butter and roll into small balls.
Keeping it fresh
Keep it in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry cupboard, away from sunlight. Use a dry spoon. Use within about a year.
Which pack to choose
It comes in a 100g pack. Because you use only a small pinch each time, this lasts a long time.
Good to know
