How to brew green tea: 6 easy ways to enjoy it
How much green tea to use, the right water, and simple ways to drink it hot or cold.
Green tea is made from tea leaves that are dried without being fermented, so they stay green. The tea is pale gold or light green, and tastes fresh, grassy and a little bitter. Like other tea, it contains caffeine. It is easy to brew badly, and easy to brew well once you know two things: not too much leaf, and water that is not fully boiling.
How much to use
Use 1 teaspoon of leaves for each cup. Let the kettle boil, then wait a minute or two before you pour, so the water is about 80 degrees. Steep for 2 to 3 minutes and strain. Boiling water or a long steep makes it bitter.
Ways to use it
- A plain hot cup. One teaspoon, a cup of cooled boiled water, 2 to 3 minutes. Drink it without milk.
- With lemon and honey. Add a squeeze of lemon and a spoon of honey after brewing.
- With ginger or mint. Add a few slices of fresh ginger or a handful of mint leaves to the pot.
- Iced green tea. Brew double strength, cool it, and pour over ice with lemon or a little sugar.
- In a jug for the day. Steep 3 tablespoons in a litre of hot water, strain, chill, and serve cold with fruit slices.
- In smoothies and baking. Cool a strong cup and blend it into a banana smoothie, or use it in place of water in cake batter.
Keeping it fresh
Keep it in a closed container in a cool, dry cupboard, away from sunlight, damp and strong smells. Tea picks up odours from nearby spices. Use within about 6 months for the freshest taste.
Which pack to choose
The 50g pack gives you a good number of cups and is enough to try it. Choose the 100g pack if you drink it daily, or want to keep some for guests.
