How to use moringa powder: 6 easy ways
Moringa powder is green and earthy. Here is how much to use in uji, smoothies, soups and sukuma.
Moringa powder is made from dried, ground moringa leaves. It is a fine, bright green powder that smells grassy and tastes earthy and a little bitter, a bit like spinach or green tea. A small amount goes a long way, and it blends best into foods with their own strong flavour.
How much to use
Start with half a teaspoon, then work up to 1 teaspoon. Add it at the end of cooking or into cold drinks. Long boiling dulls the colour and makes it taste stronger. Mix it with a little water first to avoid lumps.
Ways to use it
- Uji and porridge. Stir 1 teaspoon into a bowl of warm uji with a spoon of honey or sugar. The sweetness balances the earthy taste.
- Smoothies. Blend half a teaspoon with banana, mango or pineapple and a cup of milk or water.
- Soups and stews. Stir 1 teaspoon into a pot of soup, lentils or beans in the last few minutes.
- Sukuma wiki and greens. Sprinkle half a teaspoon over cooked greens or mix it into mashed potatoes.
- Chapati and bread dough. Add 1 teaspoon to 2 cups of flour for green flecks and a mild earthy taste.
- Scrambled eggs. Whisk a pinch into the eggs with a little salt before you cook them.
Keeping it fresh
Keep it in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry cupboard, away from sunlight. Light and damp fade the green colour. Use a dry spoon, and finish the pack within about 6 months for the best colour.
Which pack to choose
It comes in a 100g pack. At 1 teaspoon a day, that lasts many weeks. If more than one person at home uses it, plan on one pack a month.
Good to know
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take any medicine, ask your doctor before using it.
