How to use sea moss powder: 5 easy ways
Sea moss powder thickens drinks and puddings. Here is how much to use and how to mix it smooth.
Sea moss is a kind of seaweed. The dried powder is a light tan colour with a faint smell of the sea, and almost no taste once it is mixed into food. Its useful trick is that it thickens liquids and sets them softly, so it works like a natural thickener in drinks, puddings and soups.
How much to use
Start with half a teaspoon to 1 teaspoon for a glass of smoothie or a bowl of soup, and build up if you like a thicker texture. Always whisk the powder into a small amount of cool water first, then add it to the rest, so it does not form lumps. It thickens as it sits.
Ways to use it
- Smoothies. Blend 1 teaspoon with banana, mango and milk. The smoothie turns thick and creamy.
- Soups and stews. Whisk 1 teaspoon with a little water and stir it in near the end for a thicker, smoother soup.
- Simple gel. Whisk 1 tablespoon into a cup of warm water, then chill. It sets to a soft gel you can spoon into drinks or porridge. Keep the gel in the fridge and use it within a week.
- Puddings and custards. Whisk 1 teaspoon into warm milk with sugar and flavour, then chill until it sets.
- Porridge and oats. Stir half a teaspoon into the pot as it cooks for a creamier bowl.
Keeping it fresh
Keep the powder in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry cupboard. It takes up damp and clumps, so use a dry spoon. Once you make a gel or a drink with it, keep it in the fridge and finish it within a few days.
Which pack to choose
It comes in a 200g pack. You use only a spoon at a time, so this lasts many weeks. If you are trying it for the first time, share a pack with a friend.
Good to know
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take any medicine, ask your doctor before using it.
