How to use slippery elm powder: 5 easy ways
Slippery elm powder is a mild bark powder that thickens into a smooth, soft porridge.
Slippery elm powder is made from the dried inner bark of the slippery elm tree. It is a fine, pale beige powder with a mild, slightly sweet, almost maple-like smell. When it meets liquid it becomes thick and slippery, a bit like okra water or cooked oats.
How much to use
Use 1 teaspoon for a cup of liquid and 1 to 2 tablespoons for a bowl of porridge. Mix the powder into a little cold water to make a paste first, then add hot liquid and stir. If you add it straight to hot liquid, it forms lumps.
Ways to use it
- Warm porridge. Mix 1 tablespoon with a little cold water to make a paste, add a cup of hot milk, stir over low heat and sweeten with honey and cinnamon.
- Smoothies. Blend 1 teaspoon with banana and milk. It makes the drink thicker and smoother.
- Oats and uji. Stir 1 teaspoon into a bowl of oats or uji near the end of cooking.
- Thickener for soups. Mix a teaspoon with cold water and stir it into soup or stew for a smoother body.
- Pancakes and baking. Replace a tablespoon of flour with the powder in pancake batter for a softer texture.
Keeping it fresh
Keep it in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry cupboard, away from damp. Use a dry spoon. Use the pack within about a year.
Which pack to choose
It comes in an 80g pack. You use a spoon at a time, so it lasts several weeks. It is a good starter size.
